Tanzania Three Schools Project '09 Update - Kalembo

A JOB DONE "WELL, WELL & WELL" FOR TANZANIA

Last October-November, Blue Planet Run's pilot Team Blue program asked runners, walkers and cyclists to cover 30 miles to provide wells for 3 schools in Tanzania. Team Blue raised $23,000. The 3 wells are completed! 1,500 students and their families now have safe drinking water, thanks to you!

We applaud our water partner, Ruvuma Mission to the Poor and Disables (PADI), who worked with the communities to install the wells and sent us these photos. Please read the report below from Eisha Shaban, head girl at Kalembo Secondary School and notice there is a photo gallery from each school.

Project Implementation:
The project plan was intended to benefit 505 students but now over 722 people are benefiting from the water pump (100 people are the new students-form one enrolled this year, 17 are School staff members and 100 are community living around Kalembo Secondary school.

Activity planned to be done:
Several activities were planned to be done to reach goal. Among those activities included: • Mobilizing school community • Forming Well maintenance Fund(WMF) • Formation of Water Monitoring Committee(WMC) • Transportation of building material • Drilling tube well • Construction of Pump House • Conducting one day training on how to care, repair and maintain the well and sanitation and hygiene skills to school children • Project monitoring

Mobilizing school community:
PADI managed to mobilize the head of schools where each of them was given a responsibility of organizing some people who could be responsible to support well technician, monitor by forming WMF and WMC. Basically all of them agreed with the plan and they did so. WMF valuing USD.79.74 and 10 people of WMC has been formed.

Pump parts and other building materials:
All building materials reach at right time soon after receiving funds. This enabled the water technician to manage to install the pump in time.

Drilling tube well, construction of slab and flumes:Drilling tube well, construction of slab and flumes were done in time and successful. The yield of water in litters per hour is 1020 with depth of 25 meter (more details will be attached with the final report). At the moment Students are enjoying safe and clean water 24 hours.

Construction of Pump house:
We planned the pump house to be construction to be done before 1st February 2009.The work has not yet been completed to date, they have just started due to the fact that, construction of the wells started when most of the school community were on leave from Dec. 2008 to almost at the end of January 2009. They are expecting to accomplish before 15th March 2009.

Conducting one day Training:The training is not yet done as we plan to conduct soon after all other activities have completed. It will be easier for them to see how they can manage to care cleanliness, repair and maintain the wells. Monitoring: Project monitoring went well from the beginning of the project by involving PADI Management team in collaboration with Water Monitoring Committee from school Community. Though the Water Monitoring Committee involved few members but the work went well.
