What I love about traveling is being surprised by fun and unique moments. Today’s moment came at a sushi bar at a truck-stop gas station, in the middle of Poland between Krakow and Warsaw.

Tonight we started back on the 9pm-3am shift and ran in the pouring rain along the main highway connecting the biggest cities in Poland. Having never been to this country, we spent the past couple of days getting immersed in the local culture, eating pierogies, and running through the countryside.

It didn’t take long before the night-shift coffee hunt began again, and as Lansing ran the first leg of our shift we searched along the route for a java stop. No luck at the first gas station, but the second station at Lansing’s 6-mile mark looked far more promising. As we pulled in we realized that not only did they have coffee, they also had a sushi bar! Hmmm...not so sure about raw fish in these parts – I think I’ll stick to the pierogies. As we walked in, coincidentally (?) there was a decent size fish tank in the corner, and Sunil commented: “well, I guess that explains the sushi bar”. After a good laugh, we ordered up 4 coffees with milk and were surprised to get top-notch cappuccinos, complete with a spice cookie on the side for each. Having expected some instant powder nastiness, our expectations were blown away. As I looked around at the Polish truck drivers and late-night commuters I giggled to myself…this is what it means to run around the world.

August 5, 2007 - Homemade cookies

It doesn’t take much to boost morale. A dozen home-baked cookies will do the trick.

August 3, 2007 - Two fond memories

Today’s route brought us past two locales very important to me: the town of Carmel, where I proposed to Brynn, and Big Sur, where I ran one of my favorite marathons only weeks before the start of BP

July 28, 2007

This is going to be a very short blog.

Today we ran in Beijing.

It was hot.

It was humid.

It was extremely polluted.

There was relentless traffic.
