Last December, 21-year old Katie Spotz set off from Senegal on the adventure of a lifetime — a solo row across the Atlantic Ocean! Sunday, March 14 she landed safely in Georgetown, Guyana, in South America. After about 2,817 miles of rowing and 75 days alone at sea, she has become the youngest person ever to row an ocean solo and the first American to row from Africa to South America.

But this row is about more than ocean adventure, world records and personal challenges. It's about something much more important: safe drinking water. That's why Katie partnered with Blue Planet Network to help raise funds for sustainable safe drinking water projects all over the world. Unsafe drinking water is the leading cause of sickness, disease and death worldwide — but it's a problem that, working together, we can solve.
Katie's original goal was to raise enough money to provide water to 1,000 people in need.
She surpassed that goal three times,
raising a total of more than $100,000.
For the 10 weeks Katie was rowing, she kept the world posted on her progress on her web site. If you have not yet read about the adventure, you can do so now!
Thanks for your support!
In 2008, Katie completed a solo swim, 325 miles, of the Allegheny River across Pennsylvania and New York!
She is the first person ever to swim the full length of this river. She averaged about 10 miles per day with her best distance being 22 miles in one day. The river has locks and dams, so she had to get out of the water in her flippers, wetsuit and gear, to walk around them. Nothing gets in her way! [More Info]
