The Mission of the Blue Planet Network

water from the pumpOUR MISSION

Unlock the global capacity and creativity of individuals, philanthropies, businesses and expert water organizations to solve the global safe drinking water crisis.

OUR VISION

Blue Planet Network envisions a world where every human can draw from their well or turn on their tap, safely drink the water, and have access to health and economic advancement as a result.

OUR GOAL

Provide sustainable safe drinking water to 200 million people in rural communities of developing nations in the next 20 years.

OUR PHILANTHROPIC MODEL

Blue Planet Network delivers 100% of the donations it receives from individual contributors to safe drinking water projects around the world. The Network’s operating and fundraising costs are paid for by the generous support of corporate donors and foundation grants. These donors also fund water projects directly through our network.

OUR CONTRIBUTION

Using the Peer Water Exchange as its core platform, our Network has the potential to “supercharge” the capacity of those working on water, strengthen the efficiency and sustainability of their efforts and enable others to support them more effectively. It is designed to:

  • Give water organizations around the world a way to:
    1. collaborate and manage sustainable, cost-effective water solutions;
    2. manage their projects and donor communications more efficiently; and
    3. amass a global, transparent clearinghouse of water project data
  • Offer donors a single channel to:
    1. cost-effectively and pro-actively fund high quality water and sanitation projects that have been “pre-approved” by network member peer review;
    2. handle all project management issues; and
    3. see the tangible impact of their support to ensure accountability.
  • Enable companies to build brand loyalty and give back to the global community through:
    1. Support of a worldwide network that delivers measurable results project after project on an issue fundamental to human life;
    2. Connecting their customers to stories of real people and the chance to help transform their lives by enabling access to safe drinking water for only $30 a person
    3. A partnership that can scale and add value to all of their customer relationships

Our Team Blue community of engaged, impassioned individuals spread awareness of the global safe drinking water crisis, raise funds for water projects and inspire action. We are continually amazed and gratified by the creativity and commitment of Team Blue to make a real difference for safe drinking water…in their hometowns and around the world.

OUR ACCOMPLISHMENTS

Since 2006, Blue Planet Network, a San Francisco Bay Area 501©3, has supported over $25 million in sustainable water and sanitation projects via our breakthrough global online network. Blue Planet Network also has directly funded over $1.25 million in projects, impacting nearly 350,000 people in 20 countries.  Via our network, we partner with 68 expert groups, working in 22 countries, to share best practices, streamline funding and make extensive, actionable project results available to all.

The Network's inaugural awareness and fundraising event was the Blue Planet Run 2007, the first-ever around-the-world relay run.

Blue Planet Network also has published a groundbreaking book on the global water crisis, Blue Planet Run: The Race To Provide Safe Drinking Water To The World. This book uses award-winning photos and essays to put a “human face” on the global water crisis and move readers to action to bring safe drinking water to those in need.

GOING FORWARD

In order to achieve our goal of bringing safe drinking water to 200 million people in the next 20 years, we will concentrate on the following strategies for success:

  • Increase funding through the network by non-BPN funders, i.e. foundations, corporations and multi-lateral organizations, by raising awareness of the comprehensive value that Blue Planet Network can bring to their philanthropic efforts;
  • Expand our water and sanitation project data capabilities to meet and exceed our network members’ needs, including data summarization to provide best practices and streamlined processes to optimize our members’ participation;
  • Launch multiple partnerships with recognized international third parties working in the same regions as our projects to provide post-implementation project monitoring to increase sustainability and accountability.
  • Continue to grow the success of our Team Blue community as our advocates and fundraisers by providing them with the tools they need and supporting them in their campaigns to capture the public’s attention and support.
  • Ensure all our channels of communication, especially www.blueplanetnetwork.org, are the most effective, engaging and informative they can be, and that we treat all our customers and partners, with the respect their commitment to the safe drinking water cause deserves.
